MEDIEVAL SONINKE STATUARY FROM MALI

On the Bandiagara escarpment in central Mali, an exceptional moment in the history of African art began around 1000 years ago, with the appearance of an extraordinary group of around 45 wooden statues whose distinct style, attributed to the royal clans of the Soninké, preceded the efflorescence of Dogon art by over five hundred years.

Sur le plateau de Bandiagara situé au centre du Mali, on note, à partir de l’an mil, un moment d’exception dans l’histoire de l’art de l’Afrique noire avec l’apparition d’un ensemble extraordinaire d’environ 45 statues de bois dont le style distinct attribué à des clans royaux des Soninké précède l’efflorescence de l'art dogon de plus de cinq cents ans.
