De l’art des idoles baguirmi du Tchad
Catalogue raisonné sur des idoles en bois du royaume du Baguirmi, ancien Etat sahélien localisé au sud-est du Tchad. Les statuettes baguirmi sont rares avec un corpus d’une cinquantaine de figurines connues. Ces idoles, toujours féminines, seraient des portraits de femmes baguirmiennes.
Leur conception en trois parties est purement géométrique. La tête est pour la grande majorité une demisphère avec un cimier couvrant la nuque jusqu’au menton. Parfois, le nez et la bouche sont suggérés par une entaille, et les yeux par un ou deux trous. Marqué de petits seins, le corps est cruciforme, les bras se limitant à deux moignons sans les mains. Les jambes forment un cône qui s’évase à partir de la taille vers le bas, à l’image d’une robe longue. Des scarifications, souvent abondantes, recouvrent l’ensemble du corps.

Publication on wooden idols from the kingdom of Baguirmi, an ancient Sahelian state in south-eastern Chad. Baguirmi statuettes are rare, with a corpus of around fifty known figurines. These idols, always female, are thought to be portraits of Baguirmi women.
Their three-part design is purely geometric. The vast majority of the head is a half-sphere with a crest covering the nape of the neck to the chin. Sometimes, the nose and mouth are suggested by a notch, and the eyes by one or two holes. Marked by small breasts, the body is cruciform, the arms limited to two stumps without hands. The legs form a cone that flares out from the waist downwards, like a long dress. Scarification marks, often abundant, cover the entire body.
