Superbes statues singiti (sg. lusingiti) sculptées au 19e siècle, par de talentueux artistes Hemba, groupe situé dans l'est de la République démocratique du Congo, pour incarner un ancêtre spécifique. Son nom, aujourd'hui oublié, était autrefois invoqué avec ceux de ses pairs avec lesquels il formait une lignée d'ancêtres issus d'un même clan. Les effigies Singiti telles que celle-ci étaient autrefois au centre d'un important culte dédié aux ancêtres qu'elles incarnaient. Ces figures généralement bienveillantes étaient censées transmettre les pouvoirs de l’ancien à ses descendants, maintenir l'abondance du gibier, préserver la santé des habitants, et assurer la fertilité des femmes ainsi que celle des terres.

Reflections on the Buli style and the first discoveries of Hemba statuary

 Superb singiti (sg. lusingiti) figures, sculpted in the 19th century by talented Hemba artists, a group from the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to embody a specific deceased person. Their names, now forgotten, was once invoked along with those of his peers with whom they formed a lineage of ancestors from a same clan. Singiti effigies such as this one were once at the center of an important cult dedicated to the ancestors they incarnated. A remarkable example of the Niembo of the Luika style defined as one of the most prestigious styles of the Hemba aesthetic, blending both southern and northern styles, at the very heart of an artistic production that sums up and radiates, if not synthesizes, the Hemba approach to beauty.
